Emotional upheaval of surrogate mothers

Emotional upheaval of surrogate mothers

Being a surrogate mother is the splendid gift you can give a couple unable to conceive. By becoming a gestational surrogate mom, you are allowing a childless couple to experience the joy of parenthood. The couple can have a child with which they share the genetic heritage. But, whether you go for traditional or gestational surrogacy, the event will be life transformational. Surrogate moms do often bond with the child and this leads to a lot of emotional complicacy between the surrogate mom and the intended parents. The moment is too heart rending when the mom has to hand over the infant. Most of the surrogate moms report acute depression after parting with the child. The postpartum depression becomes so severe that medical attention is needed. Some mothers become so much attached to the infant that they refuse to give the child. But, this situation might have serious legal consequences. It is a legal issue when the mom changes her mind to hand over the infant. You need to consider how very strong you are.

Confusion, anger and sadness are intrinsic to surrogacy

The very fact that you need to part with the child and hand it over to the intending parents can make you frustrated, angry and sad. This can also result to acute depression requiring medical attention. The biological mom during nine months of pregnancy will definitely bond with the child. She will get emotionally attached to the child that is growing inside her.  For some moms, it is too much challenging to hand over the child. The feeling of loss can be impossible to bear. If you are in such a situation, take help from the counselors and professionals.

The family might get attached to the baby

It is not only the surrogate mother who is involved with the child, but also the family of the mom is involved. Even the spouse and the kids of the surrogate mom can get emotionally attached to the infant. The parents of the surrogate, the husband and the children get too much tied to the child. To relieve the tension to some extent, the family of the surrogate must be allowed to spend quality time with the infant.

Handling the law and the feelings

Legal issues can make everything even more difficult for the mother. If the mom has legal option to keep the infant, a lot of complicacies might arise. In most of the states, the law of surrogacy is not enforceable. This implies that the intending parents might fail to win the child after the birth. They have no right to claim the baby as such. Such a situation can further complicate the matter and make it worse.

Surrogacy is still a joyous occasion and experience

Despite all the negative emotions a mother needs to fight with, surrogacy is still a joyful experience. The very thought of helping a couple in dilemma can be enjoyable. There is no comparison to bringing a child for someone else in this world.

So, we may say that surrogate moms have to undergo a lot of emotions that include frustration, depression, anxiety, the feeling of loss. Indeed, such negative emotions may also get converted into the feeling of joy.

Different types of surrogacy you must know

Different types of surrogacy you must know

Are you the one who heard a lot about surrogacy and trying to gather more information? Whether you are planning to become a surrogate mother or you are the one facing infertility issue and want to start a family, there are many things you need to know about surrogacy. Nevertheless, becoming a surrogate mom is itself rewarding and exciting endeavor. Get to know about the different types of surrogacy like in-vitro fertilization, gestational and traditional surrogacy. Then you need to know whether you are a suitable candidate for surrogacy or not and about the law in your state.

When to consider gestational surrogacy?

In the gestational surrogacy, the surrogate mom does not supply the egg, but it might come from a donor or the intending mother. For a variety of reasons, families consider this type of surrogacy:

•    Same sex couple looking to grow the family will opt for surrogacy. When it is a gay couple, one of the males can become the biological father. However, even the lesbian couple can choose surrogacy if both partners refuse to carry the baby.

•    Infertility is the common reason for choosing surrogacy. Most women are unable to conceive just due to infertility and for them it is a suitable option. If all the natural means of getting pregnant fail, a female can choose surrogacy.

•    Medical issues and conditions can prevent any woman from conceiving. Her disease can get transferred to the offspring and thus it is better to choose surrogacy. Medical issues like heart diseases, acute diabetes prevents a woman from conceiving.

•    Any single father or mother can choose surrogacy to get a biological child.

Facts on gestational surrogacy

•    It is an Assisted Reproductive Technology in which the mom becomes the host to an embryo being transferred to her uterus.

•    Here the embryo is created through the IVF where the egg of biological mother is mixed along with the biological father’s sperm.

•    Surrogate mother carries the baby with whom she is not attached genetically. The baby here carries the genes of the biological father and mother or the intended couple

•    It demarcates the relation between all three parties, namely, the surrogate, the baby and the couple

•    The treatment is more expensive as IVF is involved.

Traditional surrogacy and its facts

In a traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mom is inseminated with the male partner’s sperm of infertile couple. So, the child gets related genetically to the surrogate. Following are the facts:

•    The surrogate mom here uses her own eggs as the eggs of the intended mom are of poor quality.

•    Conceiving takes place through an artificial insemination.

•    The sperm of the father is placed into the uterus of the surrogate mom or in the vagina.

•    She shares genetic relation with the child.

•    There is more chance of legal complications here as the mom may refuse to separate from the child.

So, after checking the details about gestational and traditional surrogacy, you may choose anyone. Surrogacy is a wonderful way to build a family, even if a couple is infertile.

Artificial womb research

Artificial womb research

Artificial wombs refer to the synthetic reconstruction of uterus or biological wombs allowing the gestation of embryo or an organism outside the biological womb. The whole process is known as ectogenesis. With the help of in-vitro fertilization and an artificial uterus, it is possible to reproduce animals utilizing uterus based gestation. This can be done outside the body of the host or the mother. But, still in the 21st century, the technology challenges relating to the creation of artificial uterus remain formidable. A lot many social complications will emerge as a result of successful development of an artificial uterus. It would be a controversial reproductive technology that cannot be embraced so easily. The University of Nottingham has revealed for the first time the vital process for developing mammalian embryo. It is done in the new device created by Kevin Shakesheff which resembles a soft tissue of mammalian uterus. This research got published in the Nature Communications Journal.

The critical aspect of the fetus development never seen before

Ectogenesis uses the new lab culture for the development of fetus which allowed the scientists and researchers to see the various critical aspects of a fetus development never seen before. It is possible for the very first time to grow embryo outside the human womb for the first time. The research utilizes the mouse model to view the real time processes of the growth. As per Professor Shakesheff, with the help of unique techniques and materials, it became possible to show research colleagues the previously unseen behavior of human cells at its vital stage of growth and development. The research work by Shakesheff would open up further secrets and improve the medical treatments requiring tissues for regeneration. Indeed, it would improve IVF and the biologists would get to know how the tissues form.

Trials of artificial wombs soon to begin in the UK

Trials of the artificial wombs holding the test-tube embryo and exposing them to natural conditions will start very shortly in the UK. Indeed, the new device will produce better babies according to the researchers. It will also cut down the time which gets wasted while harvesting multiple eggs from infertile women. In the standard IVF, eggs that are harvested from a woman are usually fertilized in the lab and develop in the incubator for 2-5 days. Then, the healthiest of embryo is transferred to the womb of the mother. But here in the artificial womb, the embryo will be created in a lab setting so that it is incubated in the container shaped womb. After some days, the capsule will be recovered and finally embryo will be chosen for implantation inside the womb. Those embryos that are incubated in the laboratory should have the growth medium modified in every few hours. This is done to provide fresh supply of nutrients and eliminate the waste.

So, it may be said that the artificial womb provides a kind of natural environment for the successful development of the fetus. After loading artificial womb with embryos, they are sealed tightly and connected to the wire. According to Shakesheff, everyone grew of single cell with weeks of embryo forming, followed by the development of organs and tissues.

Surrogate mother takes care her neglected down’s, baby

The lady who carried the child in her wombs could not deny taking care of helpless child. The child is deprived and neglected by his parents for being down’s. But the carrier of the child Pattaramon Chanbua could not ignore him. She took the responsibility of the treatment of the ill baby Gammy.

Gammy was suffering from the congenital heart condition, and critical lung infection in the hospital and the fund for his treatment was collected through the social media. There were 3,400 donors who made a fund of $150,000 for treating the child. The prime minister of Australia also expressed his grief for the child who was neglected by his parents who took responsibility of his healthy twin sister.

The story of Gammy

This child has a pathetic story that can make you morose, and it is really difficult t think about how the parents neglected their baby just for being down’s which not even his fault was. Ms. Pattaramon was four months pregnant when she came to know the condition of the baby. The original parents of the child suggested her to get an abortion, but she denied to abort as a Buddhist. She continued her pregnancy and gave birth to the child. But the child was neglected by his original parents for being sick since childhood.

Ms. Pattaramon told that she was given $15,000 for becoming the surrogate mother for a couple. The money was needed to the lady as she had two kids and she wanted to secure their education and repay their debts with the money. So could not ignore the offer and she became the mother of Gammy. But after his birth when he was deprived of his parents, Ms. Pattaramon took the responsibility of bringing up the child like her two other kids.

The identity of the biological parents of the child is not yet disclosed, but their act is discussed among people. Their heartless act with the child is shameful and intolerable according to the people. They have expressed their anger to the heartless couple.

Someone has told that separating twins is a heartless act.  The real mother of Gammy has expressed her love and true feeling for her baby who is now six months old. The mother told that she had a wish to see her son as a nice human being which is important in these days. Ms. Pattaramon is only 21 years old, and she already has two sons apart from Gammy. She vows to take a proper care of her son Gammy who is suffering from health issues. She had expressed her question why Gammy should face the negligence in his life when he had done nothing. Her humanity is expressed by her words and acts for her down’s baby in a remarkable way.

Bizarre Incidence involving a Surrogate Mother and a Couple

Bizarre Incidence involving a Surrogate Mother and a Couple

Ever since the concept of surrogacy has been introduced more and more people each year are opting for it. It has become a popular choice to give birth among couples who struggle with infertility. While being a surrogate mother may seem like a very noble idea. However there are some cases where it may backfire and leave you in a pickle. One such bizarre incident a surrogate mother was left on her own to take care of the babies who she was carrying for another couple.  Here is the full story.

Initial Days of Pregnancy

It all seemed normal for Susan Ring, who had been a surrogate mother to eight children, Was approached to be a surrogate mother by a couple. She was particularly confident about this couple as she had already been a surrogate mother to their son. So she saw nothing wrong with being the surrogate mother to another of their child as her earlier experience with them was very good and peaceful.

Problems

Once she got pregnant the second time around with the couple’s children. She was told that she had triplets. At the behest of the couple she had to reduce them to being twins. However, a few weeks into her pregnancy she was told by the agency that the couple no longer wanted the children those she was carrying. The reason for them no longer wanting these children were that they were getting divorced. This obviously came as a shock to Susan. She stated that she was really perplexed and kept wondering why they had such a sudden change in plan, considering they wanted to have more children only a few weeks ago and then a few weeks later they wanted to be separate. She tried to persuade the couple to raise the babies as she could no longer abort because she was already in her 14th week of pregnancy, but she was unable to convince them.

Solution

When Susan realized that there was no other way to convince the two of them to stay together for the sake of their kids, she decided to take care of them instead of giving them away. Susan has always been very fond of kids, so it was particularly difficult for her to give them away to an orphanage. She received no financial support from neither the agency nor the couple. One of the blunders made by the agency according to Susan is that they did not ask for payment upfront. Instead they agreed on a progress payments based on trust. This option was made available to them because of the agencies good relationship with the couple during the first child’s birth.

It was only later that she had no other option than to take legal help was she able to get any kind of assistance from the others. However, despite all the difficulties that Susan might have faced initially during and after her pregnancy she claims to be happy now. For her it was all worth it for her after everything she had gone though.

Challenges of Artificial Child Birth

Challenges of Artificial Child Birth

Back in the year 1924, JBS Haldane, a famous biologist introduced the world to ectogenesis. Ectogenesis is human pregnancy which is provided with the help of an artificially made womb. He went on to predict that by the year 2074 this type of pregnancy would become so common that just a few, less than 30%, births, would happen out of an actual woman. However for that to happen major advancements are required in the incubators.

Early Days of Ectogenesis

This process owes its origin in 1880 at a time when Etienne Stéphane Tarnier, an obstetrician from France made something similar to crude incubator. Although it helped to improve the mortality rate, yet there was no upgrade to its design and technology till about 1950s

During the period of early and mid-1960s many experiments were carried out to transform these incubators to act more like a womb. Attempts were made to create placentas artificially to support life till a fetus properly develops when it can function independently. Experiments for this purpose were carried out on rabbit, lamb and goat fetuses. However, most of these experiments proved futile because of problems pertaining to the difficulties related to maintaining proper circulation to fetus’ heart.

Present Day Incubators

The efficient and sleek looking incubators that we see today are not very different to those that existed decades ago. They function almost identically and they are still not technologically advanced enough to provide vital nutrients which are key for the growth of the baby. It is because of this that babies usually have to be given nutrients via catheters directly inserted into their veins. It is common for the babies to try and pull out the tubes inserted in his or her veins as these can cause discomfort and mild pain. In order to prevent that the babies from doing that they are at times given sedatives. In addition to this, there is a big risk of infection from the tubes which are inserted into their veins, to the future health of the baby. So it is safe to assume that the modern day incubators have a lot of room for improvement.

Complications with Artificial child births

Presently the earliest a baby that has survived birth is 22 weeks of pregnancy.  However it has been noticed that in about 4/5th of these cases babies born within 23 weeks fail to survive and those that manage to survive suffer from major health problems, due to them having immature organs.  Lung diseases which are chronic in nature are very common in such cases. It is very difficult for premature babies to survive with under developed lungs as the failure of respiratory system is very common challenge.

Another very challenging aspect is the brain. The first 37-40 weeks are very important for gestation. It is only after that period can the brain support life outside of the womb. The brain is more at risk of injury when a baby is born prematurely causing blindness, deafness and cerebral palsy. This makes artificial birth a complex affair even in this day and age.

A new ray of hope is an artificial womb for the premature babies

A new ray of hope is an artificial womb for the premature babies

Science can make impossible things possible, and the artificial wombs are another example of the truth. Researchers have made an amazing womb that can provide the atmosphere of the mother’s womb to the babies of the lambs who were born at an extremely premature stage. These lambs survived in the artificial womb for one month after their birth, and they grew up normally in the womb as well. This successful research has given hope to the doctors, and they are thinking of applying it on the human babies as well.

When a fetus grows up in the mother’s womb, their organs get matured, and similarly in this womb, the lambs grew up in a very normal way. Their lungs along with other organs matured like the normal fetus in the wombs of their mothers. This experiment was done on eight premature lambs, and some of these are doing well now. One of these lambs has completed one year, and some of these are kept in ventilation. Some of these lambs are reaching in their adulthood as well.

The leader of the study was Alan Flake who has told that the developments of the lambs are very normal like other fetuses in the mother’s wombs. The development of the brain of the lambs cannot be exempted though, but the behaviors of the lambs are very normal and smart.

Complications in the premature babies

The study can be beneficial for the babies who born before completing their 22 to 23 weeks gestational age in the wombs of their mothers. These babies usually have a very low birth weight that is around 1 pound only. The chance of their survival is 50 percent only. The premature babies who survive can suffer from some lifetime health issues and severe problems.

How the modern technology help these babies

The artificial womb can make the survival rate increased among the premature babies if it gets the ultimate success on the human babies. This device is transparent, and it looks like an interesting aquarium. The device has a plastic bag which is full of amniotic fluid. This fluid is the main nutrition supplier to the babies, and it also keeps the babies away from the infections. There is also a machine used in this system. The machine is connected to the umbilical cord of the baby and helps him to breathe by supplying oxygen and eliminating carbon-dioxide particles from the blood of the babies. The intention of making this bag is not to increase the chances of replacing the fetus from the mother’s womb, but this bag is made for helping the babies who take birth before 22 to 23 weeks gestational age to survive. The bag is meant to increase the rate of survival babies in the world according to the leader Alan Flake.
